A total of 3404 street trees were surveyed in Taichung, 65.63 percent were causing damage to pavements and kerbs. There were significant differences in the proportions of trees of differnet species causing pavements and kerbs damage. Samanea saman, Delonix regia, Ficus benjamina, Ficus microcarpa and Ficus elastica may cause more significant damage than other species. The large-growing trees, Samanea saman, Delonix regia and Ficus microcarpa should not be grown in confined spaces. Damage was found to increase with tree size(dbh). There were species differences in the size at which damage became noticeable. Alstonia scholaris and Cinnamomum camphora started to cause damage when they wre 11-20cm dbh, but Chorisia speciosa did not generally cause until dbh>40cm. Trees planted into pavement caused more significant damage than trees planted in planting strips. When possible, the use of groundcovers would avoid the pavement damage.
